Window replacement in Madison

Madison’s Window Company, Based on the East Side

Respect Windows replaces windows in Madison homes of every age, from the pre-war sash in Marquette and Vilas to the 1990s vinyl on the far west side. We install ProVia windows only, each one built to the measured opening, and every quote starts with photos instead of a sales appointment.

Half of Madison’s housing was built before 1980. Most of the windows we price in the city are either original wood or a first round of replacements that has already worn out.

What Madison Homes Are Working With

ProVia double-hung replacement windows with grids, the style most older Madison homes already have

The windows in Madison today

Madison’s housing falls into three rough bands. The isthmus and the near east and west sides are full of bungalows, foursquares and cottages from the 1910s to the 1940s, many still on their original double-hung sash behind a storm window. The ring built after the war, from Westmorland and Hill Farms out to Lake Edge and Glendale, is ranch country, with a big living-room picture window in almost every house. Past the Beltline and out toward the interstate the homes are newer, and much of their vinyl is now twenty to thirty years old.

Each band fails in its own way. Old sash leaks air around the weights and the meeting rail. Mid-century picture windows are usually single glass or an early sealed unit that has fogged. Newer vinyl tends to lose its balances first, so the sashes will not stay up, and then its seals. If yours sweat or frost every January, start with our guide to condensation on windows in winter.

Replacing Windows in Madison

Five local historic districtsHomes in Mansion Hill, Third Lake Ridge, University Heights, Marquette Bungalows and First Settlement need Landmarks Commission approval before exterior changes, and the city keeps a separate window replacement form. Tell us if your house is in one and we will quote a window that keeps the existing look.
Permits outside the districtsIn most of the city a same-size replacement does not need a building permit. Making an opening larger, cutting a new one or adding a basement egress window does. Ask in your quote notes and we will tell you which side of that line your project is on.
The east side is our back yardOur shop is at 2601 Seiferth Rd, so Eastmorland, Lake Edge and Glendale are a few minutes away. The rest of the city is still a short drive, and we work in all of it.

Common questions

Madison Window Replacement FAQ

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Madison?

Usually not for a same-size replacement in a one or two family home. A bigger opening, a new opening or a basement egress window is different, and a house in one of the five local historic districts needs Landmarks Commission approval before any exterior change. Ask in your quote notes and we will tell you what applies.

Can you replace windows on a house in a Madison historic district?

Yes. ProVia builds double-hungs with grid patterns and exterior colors that keep an older house looking like itself. Approval is the city’s decision, so send photos early and we will quote a window that gives the application its best chance.

Do you replace windows in Madison rental properties?

Yes. More than half of Madison’s occupied homes are rented, and duplexes and small rental buildings are a normal part of our work. Send photos of each unit’s windows and we can price the whole building in one quote.

How fast can you quote a Madison house?

Most quotes go out by email within one business day of the photos arriving. We then measure once in person before anything is ordered, and for most of the city that visit is a short drive from Seiferth Road.
